For the last six years, Ive done road trips all over the Western US in various EVs.
But as a car journalist, Ive also had the opportunity to drive almost every EV under the sun.
The Chevy Silverado EV getting a charge
In other words, when it comes toEV road trips, its not my first rodeo.
But could we really do this road trip in an EV?
Thats not a lot of choice.

Wed also need a dual-motor (AWD) EV with increased ground clearance.
The Hummer EV is too bulky, and the Cybertruck isnt available from the press fleet.
All of them are more than capable of handling unpaved forest roads.
Gotta love a big frunk.
Its no secret that Im a big fan of Rivians EVs and the R1T in particular.
These EVstick all the right boxes, and are simply outstanding.
In fact, giant frunk and independent rear suspension aside, its basically identical to the gas/diesel/hybrid F-150.

The Truck
Chevrolets Silverado EV was new to me.
The stage was all set for our epic journey.
As a result, the Silverado EV inherits theChevrolet Avalanches midgate system from a decade ago.

Of course, this much battery comes at a price.
The Silverado EV in RST trim with the Max Range battery costs $97,895 and weighs about 10,000lbs.
The October weather was lovely, and we enjoyed tasty coffee, pleasant walks, and delicious meals.
Planning the charge.
While Electrify Americas 350kW chargers would provide the shortest charging times, I decided to prioritize Teslas Superchargers instead.
In Michigan, Electrify America charges $0.56/kWh, and with a 205kWh battery, this adds up fast.

Chevy Silverado EV getting one more charge.
Since the Silverado EV supports Superchargers with an adapter, its a no-brainer.
On Thursday evening, I located a Supercharger in Detroit (1301 8 Mile Rd.)
I didnt run into issues with any of them.
This charging session cost $62.56 at $0.41/kWh with my Tesla subscription.
We arrived in the woods with about 55% charge remaining and spent two days relaxing in nature.
We gained 116kWh in 48 minutes while having lunch.
It cost $45.20 at $0.39/kWh.
The Silverado EV is quick, powerful, fun to drive, quiet, roomy, and supremely comfortable.
It was a lot of fun exploring all the outdoor art and testing phone cameras.
We charged from 28 to 50% in 13 minutes and gained 53kWh.
It was fast, but it cost $31.51 at $0.56/kWh without EAs subscription.
I used the Tesla adapter again and spent $46.74 at $0.40/kWh.
Thats not spectacular, but its not terrible, either.
Whats most remarkable, though, is the Silverado EVs 460-mile range.
But no matter what, this pickup trucks amazing range makes it a complete game changer.
Color me impressed the Silverado EV might just be the ultimate electric road-trip machine.
Oh, and Chevy, if youre reading, I have one request.
